Here's where you can ask.. http://www.labrada.com/asklee Today's ask Lee question comes from Goran Bencic in Australia. QUESTION: He asks: "Lee can you please explain the difference between a whey isolate protein powder and a blended protein powder? When should each one be used and why?" ANSWER: Goran, with the number of protein powder offerings on the market today, it's easy to get confused as to which one is right for your goals. Not to worry, because as long as you choose a high-quality protein powder you're going to get the protein that your muscles need for recovery. Keep in mind that you can also get plenty of protein from whole foods such as chicken, fish, and egg whites, but protein powders sure make things more convenient. That being said, different protein powders do offer different functionalities. For instance, whey protein isolate is 90% whey protein, with very little lactose, sugar or fat. It's very easy for your body to digest and assimilate, therefore it's well-suited for consumption right after working out. Additionally, whey protein isolate is very high in branched-chain amino acids and glutamine, both of which are necessary for muscle recovery. Protein blends, on the other hand, will contain a blend of different kinds of proteins, as the name implies. A protein blend, may contain whey protein, but it may also contain milk protein isolate, casein, or even a vegetable protein such as soy or rice. Protein blends are typically more slowly absorbed than whey protein isolate, making them ideal for providing a longer acting, more slowly released protein that can support you throughout the day. So to summarize, whey protein isolate, such as our Iso Lean Pro is quickly absorbed and is ideal for consumption right after your workout, or at other times when fast digestion is necessary. Protein blends such as our LeanPro 8 or ProV60 should be used at other times of the day along with meals or as separate protein shakes. I hope that this helps. I'm Lee Labrada, your lean body coach.
