The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was a maximum-security prison that housed some of the most notorious criminals in American history. Due to its location on an island surrounded by cold, treacherous waters, Alcatraz was considered an inescapable prison. Notable inmates included Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, and Robert Stroud, also known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz."

Despite its reputation as an impenetrable prison, there have been several notable escape attempts from Alcatraz. The most famous one occurred in 1962 when three inmates—Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin—managed to escape the prison. To this day, their fate remains unknown, and the escape has become the subject of speculation and various theories.
