It is eighty years since Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt met off the coast of Newfoundland and created the Atlantic Charter, a document that set out their hopes for the post-war world and which came to underpin the allied war effort and influence the creation of the United Nations. On his way back to Britain, Churchill stopped in Iceland on 16 August and spent a busy day touring the island which stood at the forefront of the defence of the North Atlantic. Here he reviewed a joint parade of British and American forces at which the tune "United States Marines" bit so deeply into his memory that he could not get it out of his head. It was a deeply symbolic moment, coming as it did several months before Pearl Harbor and the formal American entry into the war. This event will explore the context, significance and legacy of the visit.
