Various of wounded being treated STORYLINE: Israeli air strikes killed two Hamas militants in Gaza early on Saturday, a day after Israel sealed the territory and bombed an empty Hamas government ministry in an intensifying campaign to halt rocket fire on Israeli border towns. The fighting on Saturday, began when Israeli troops backed by several tanks and bulldozers moved into Gaza, close to the town of Jebaliya, witnesses said. Israeli forces searched several houses, triggering a gunfight with Hamas militants. Israeli aircraft fired three missiles during the fighting, killing two Hamas militants, the witnesses said. AP Television pictures showed the bodies of the dead men in a nearby hospital morgue. Some of those injured in the fighting were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The Israeli army had no immediate comment. Later, an air strike hit a car carrying rockets in the northern Gaza Strip, the Israeli army said. No casualties were reported in that incident. The Israeli army frequently conducts air strikes and land operations in the Gaza Strip, a sovereign coastal territory that borders Israel, in an effort to stop projectiles being fired towards Israel. Violence has surged since Tuesday, when an Israeli ground and air offensive against rocket squads claimed the lives of 19 Palestinians, including the militant son of a prominent Hamas leader. Thirty-six Gazans have been killed in Israeli attacks since Tuesday, including at least 10 civilians. Since Tuesday, Hamas has joined other groups lobbing crude rockets and mortar shells across the border and by nightfall on Friday over 160 projectiles had fallen, according to the Israeli military. They caused no serious injuries. An escalation of the Gaza fighting could complicate US President George W. Bush's efforts to prod the sides toward a final peace deal by year's end and sour talks between Israel and the Abbas government.
