Main opposition party rally in Istanbul

(25 Jul 2016) Turkey's main opposition party CHP staged a rally in Istanbul's cosmopolitan Besiktas district on Monday.
The crowd marched with torches and flags to the Besiktas centre.
Compared to other rallies held by the ruling AKP party, there was a much more secular theme, although there was still criticism of the failed coup.
Respects were paid to the heroes of the Turkish Independence War rather than those killed in the attempted coup.
An uneasy alliance was demonstrated as secular people listened to the Quran and women in headscarves listened to and sang songs closely associated with secularism.
Ever since the attempted coup on 15 July, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the ruling AKP party have invited their political base to the streets and squares each night, while other parties remained relatively cautious, with CHP holding two such events, and pro-Kurdish HDP one.
