Greater Manchester played its part in the Battle of Britain. Norman Bagshaw Heywood, born 1918 in Timperley, flew Fairey Battle bombers before volunteering as a fighter pilot. He served with three Hurricane squadrons in the Battle of Britain. His father, an RAF pilot, lost his life on the Western Front when Heywood was just a few weeks old. Heywood obtained a civilian flying certificate at Brooklands in Surrey before joining the RAF. On October 22, 1940, Pilot Officer Heywood, flying a Hurricane from No 257 Squadron, engaged in combat with German fighters over Folkestone. Unfortunately, his aircraft was hit by "friendly" anti-aircraft fire, resulting in a crash on Romney Marsh. Heywood's body was recovered, and he rests in a family plot in Stretford cemetery.
