The 65th Grammy Awards took place on February 5, 2023, and honored the best music that was released in 2022. Among the many memorable moments, we saw Adele and Lizzo have a blast together, a slew of hip-hop artists celebrate the genre’s 50 years of existence, and Viola Davis become an EGOT.
But before this edition of the Grammy awards, there was an idea among journalists according to which the public perception of the Grammys’ relevance could come down to the fate of a single artist. Every major newspaper speculated about whether Beyonce would finally win the Grammy's top prize for her latest album, Renaissance. A win in one of the general categories could be viewed as a long-overdue make-up for her controversial losses in the Album of the Year category. But a big loss could throw into doubt the redemption narrative that the Recording Academy has been carefully developing for years in order to address long-standing criticism that the program fails to reward black artists with the most prestigious awards. While Beyonce eventually became the most awarded artist in the show's history, she once again failed to win in any of the general categories, including Album of the Year. In this video, we’ll first revisit Beyonce’s history at the Grammy Awards to see how she’s managed to become the most decorated artist in the show’s history. Then, we’ll take a look at the most notable wins, and finally, we'll discuss the factors that could have played against Renaissance in the Album of the Year race and what this all means for the Grammys. |
