Neocart study |

(KUTV) A new device is being tested at TOSH with the help of Vanessa Henricksen. Instead of the standard treatment for cartilage injuries near the tibia, called a microfracture, patients use a piece of their own body for treatment. Patients undergo a biopsy of a tiny piece of knee cartilage. From there its taken to a lab where a larger flap is grown. Doctors at TOSH then cut it to the size and shape of the injury, and implant it. The neocart graft is then glued into place, no stitches needed. "Its your own cell so it should be like you never had an injury to begin with, Henricksen said. Research is still underway with 245 patients needed. Those interested in being a part of this study need to be between ages 18 to 55, suffering from knee pain, and have been told that microfracture surgery is a treatment.
