Coronavirus: Trudeau and Canadian officials address travel abroad, new COVID-19 variants | FULL

video thumbnail
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke Tuesday about MPs and other Canadian politicians travelling abroad for non-essential reasons during the pandemic, stressing that "no one should be vacationing abroad" right now.

Asked about members of his own Liberal caucus travelling, the prime minister said he was disappointed they had travelled and added there were consequences, including the loss of committee responsibilities.

In a media availability following the prime minister, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc and other health officials addressed issues including travel outside the country and concerns over new variants of the coronavirus.

LeBlanc said the federal government “can’t be more clear” about the risks of travelling abroad. Meanwhile, Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said all cases of the new coronavirus variant first identified in the U.K. were identified in travellers or those in contact with them and that officials don’t expect large numbers of cases related to the variant.

Tam urged Canadians to “double down” on their efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus, especially with a new variant that could be more transmissible.
