A decades-long shadow war burst out into the open overnight as Iran attacked Israel with more than 300 drones and missiles that lit up the night sky in Israel and the occupied West Bank. This was a retaliatory attack by Iran following Israel's alleged strikes against the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria and comes in the backdrop off the ongoing Gaza war. Prior to this direct attack, Iran had only supported proxies like Hamas, Houthis and Hezbollah to target Israel. But this direct war between Iran and Israel marks a major escalation in West Asia and threatens stability in the Middle East.
