I realize that not everyone may be able or interested in purchasing actual physical real estate. However, incorporating it into your portfolio in the form of a financial security tradable on an exchange is a viable alternative. This is where a REIT can come into play and be a good alternative to someone who does want to be somehow invested in real estate, without having to dish out tens and tens of thousands to become a property owner. Now, if this is the first time you hear about a REIT, this acronym stands for Real Estate Investment Trust.

There are a handful of different REITs in Canada that invest in various different forms of real estate, and most of them have pretty decent balance sheets paying out healthy dividends, which is what we’re after!
