More than 1,000 killed in Afghanistan quake, Taliban asks for foreign aid, S. Korean gov't to provide aid

The five-point-nine magnitude quake has taken the lives of more than a thousand people as of Wednesday. The Taliban is asking for aid. South Korea has pledged a million dollars in humanitarian assistance. Lee Ji-yoon has more. A frantic search for survivors after a powerful earthquake rocked southeastern Afghanistan. At least a thousand people have been killed and more than 15-hundred injured. According to the U.S. Geological Survey,... the quake hit at around 1:30 AM local time on Wednesday,... around 44 kilometers from the city of Khost,... near Pakistan. "It was about midnight when the quake struck. It destroyed the houses of our neighbors. When we arrived, there were many dead and wounded. They sent us to the hospital. I also saw many dead bodies." And with cell towers knocked out,... communication with the disaster zones are said to be poor or non-existant. "So, having a humanitarian operation put in place is going to be immediately challenged by the lack of easy access to the area, to the region, and I think that is going to be probably one of the big challenges.” Meanwhile, the Taliban is pleading for help from the international community and aid agencies. Afghanistan has been facing a severe economic crisis ever since the Taliban took over when troops from the U.S. and other nations left the country last year. Along with other countries, the South Korean government is lending a helping hand. Seoul's foreign ministry announced on Thursday that South Korea will provide one million dollars in humanitarian assistance to quake victims in Afghanistan.
