Every wisdom tradition includes breath work. It is one of the most valuable tools for connecting our physical body with our energy body. Breathing techniques are always available and require no fancy equipment.

Since we breathe from the moment we are born until we die, we have the opportunity to practice throughout our entire life. Yet, although we breathe all the time, often we are not conscious of much of what is happening during the process.

Taoist breath work exercises are very numerous, and they majorly emphasize the movement of the 4 diaphragms, as well as the lungs and the perineum. These practices, though simple, are time-tested and extremely powerful because of the pumping effect of breathing on our energy flow and Qi (life-force) pressure within.

For example, in reverse breathing that Master Mantak Chia demonstrates in this video the diaphragm lowers and the abdomen contracts on inhalation👆🏻The increased pressure in the abdomen packs the energy from the breath into the tissues, organs and spine. On the exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward as the stomach relaxes outward. As the pressure in the abdomen is released, the energy flows outward to wherever we direct it with our intention.

Reverse breathing is used to build Qi and draw it deeply into the tissues and bones, strengthening the immune system. It is good for toning the abdominal muscles and increasing lung capacity. This type of breathing also builds energy in the kidneys, which contributes to our core energy foundation and supports the Heart.
