Greece and Serbia are united by the Orthodox faith and a long history. Both fought together against the Turks, the Bulgarians, and the Germans. Greece was also the only NATO country to oppose NATO's bombing of Serbia in 1999. The Greeks accused NATO of using the intervention in a humanitarian disaster as a pretext to pursue its own interests. This went so far that the judges from the Greek Supreme Court declared NATO and U.S. President Bill Clinton guilty of war crimes. Greece also allegedly passed secret NATO documents to Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladić during the Bosnian War, after which NATO expelled Greece from its intelligence sharing. Today, Greece is one of five countries in the European Union that do not recognize Kosovo as an independent country.
