Canada’s top doctor once again appealed to younger people to get their COVID-19 vaccine shots as the country is now dealing with “the pandemic of the unvaccinated” with nearly 7 million eligible people still not fully vaccinated.
Dr. Theresa Tam, chief public health officer of Canada, said the ICUs are getting filled with younger people. “This is a signal, learn from the west and know that this could happen anywhere where vaccine coverage is low," she said, adding that "the ICUs are being filled up with younger people, these are not seniors, these are people definitely under sixty.” Tam reported that infection rates among the unvaccinated were 11 times higher than among those who got their shots. She also reported that hospitalization rates were 39 times higher among the unvaccinated during the past month. Tam’s call comes as several western provinces are dealing with a surge in COVID-19 cases, specifically Alberta, which brought in sweeping restrictions and vaccine passports to prevent the health system from collapse.
