US Open Ranking and Statistics (Open Era)
As one of the 4 Grand Slams, the US Open is one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments. Like Wimbledon, Roland Garros & the Australian Open its history and tradition exceed 100 years. Known originally as the US National Championships, the event became Open for professional players in 1968 (along with other Grand Slams & other important tournaments. Some, like the Australian Open, followed a year later). Since then many of the most famous tennis players have set their mark in the tournament. Greats like Rod Laver, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, AndrΓ© Agassi, Pete Sampras and of course the 'Big 3', Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal & Novak Djokovic, competed against each other in many Finals. Interestingly, however, multiple winners Federer and Nadal have never faced each other in this Grand Slam. Until 1974 the US Open was played on grass courts. It was then played on clay for 3 editions before switching to Hard Courts in 1978. Only one man managed to win the title on more than one of these surfaces.
