Dr. Stone is biased toward replacing injured knee tissues biologically as part of a BioKnee reconstruction. But for those patients with true bone-on-bone, worn-out knees, The Stone Clinic helps return athletes to sports with robotically-assisted knee joint replacements.

We have partial knee replacement patients now running triathlons and (ultra)marathons, climbing mountains, skiing a hundred days a year on their replaced parts inside their knee.

For unparalleled accuracy in placement, we use the MAKO Surgical Corp Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopaedic System. The system robotically guides the surgeon to precisely replace the joint, resulting in better alignment and reducing the risk of early wear. This minimally invasive technique preserves all the patient’s ligaments and produces a strong, natural-feeling knee that provides rapid pain relief and a return to an active lifestyle. Unlike a total knee replacement that unnecessarily removes healthy parts of your knee, a partial knee replacement preserves your healthy tissue and ONLY replaces the damaged areas.

TRANSCRIPT:

Patients have the option of having a partial replacement or a biologic knee reconstruction. While some patients may need full knee resurfacing, often they can get by with things that permit them to return to full sports and have an active lifestyle without undergoing the traditional knee replacement procedures. So for the patient who needs a knee replacement, our approach is the following: Number one, we want to do a full assessment of their knee, both with our physical therapy team, our x-rays MRI and physical exam, and understand that patient's mechanics and understand how to help them the most. When a patient has only worn out one part of their knee, often we can do a partial knee replacement rather than a complete knee replacement. And what this means is that we can resurface just one part of the knee here, the femur and the tibia, or just the patellofemoral joint here that trochlea and put a button on the patella.

This permits us to not touch the rest of the knee. And the knee becomes a much more favorable, forgotten knee by three months. For most patients, first, we do a CT scan and build a 3d model of the knee joint of that patient's own knee joint. And then, we can place the components on the computer before ever touching the patient. So partial knee replacement done as an outpatient with a robot has revolutionized the options for patients with arthritis in order to get them back to the sports they love with an outpatient procedure that takes about three months of physical therapy to get them back to what they call a forgotten knee.
