He was a scholar, a war hero, a Māori welfare officer and local politician. But Arapeta Awatere, a former commander of the 28th Māori Battalion, spent the last seven years of his life in the cold concrete confines of Mt Eden Prison as a convicted murderer. A number of influential people say his murder conviction was a travesty of justice and are campaigning to restore the former colonel's reputation.
