Best Overall: NETGEAR Nighthawk X6S

Big and bold, Netgear's Nighthawk X6S can fill most homes with high-speed Wi-Fi, but it needs to use a third-party service to protect your family. At $335, it is among the most expensive routers on the market, yet the company supports the router for a short three months. Netgear's Nighthawk X6S is one of the largest routers on the market and is about one-quarter bigger than the Linksys WRT32X router. The X6S is old school, with no fewer than 11 LEDs upfront that blinks away like a Christmas tree. In addition to indicators for power and internet, there are lights for the four downstream LAN ports and all three wireless channels. Happily, it has a switch in the back for turning all the LEDs off. The Nighthawk X6S is built around Broadcom's BCM4365E Wi-Fi chip. It has a dual-core 1.8GHz processor, 128MB of RAM, and 512MB of solid-state storage for holding the system's firmware and settings. While this router does without the WRT32X's bandwidth-expansion technology, the X6S uses the latest Mu-Mimo technology to connect with several devices at once.

The Eero 6 is an affordable Wi-Fi 6 upgrade for larger homes with many computers and smart devices. Mesh Wi-Fi systems can be both expensive and complicated to set up. Hence, the new Eero 6 aims to destroy capital letters - it insists on calling the devices ‘eero’ - and to provide an affordable and easy-to-use upgrade for people who want to improve their home Wi-Fi. And, rather than being ‘version 6’ as the name suggests, the Eero 6 is the first model to introduce the new Wi-Fi 6 technology. The most notable feature of the Eero 6 is simply that it’s a lot less expensive than most of its Wi-Fi 6 rivals, costing just $279 for a three-piece kit that contains a primary router and two ‘extenders,’ which together provide dual-band Wi-Fi 6 capable of covering homes up to 5,000 sq. ft in size. There are plenty of faster mesh systems available - including the tri-band Eero 6 Pro - but the Eero 6 still stands out as being one of the most affordable mesh systems to offer Wi-Fi 6, and that 1800Mbps speed should still be fast enough for basic web browsing and streaming video on most home broadband connections.

Best Budget: TP-Link AC1200

The TP-Link Archer A6 is a budget-priced dual-band router that offers some features usually found on more expensive models, but its performance falls behind the competition. Its 5GHz performance is solid, and it leaves a bit to be desired on the 2.4GHz band. It also lacks the USB connectivity and built-in malware protection that you get with the more expensive Asus RT-AC66U B1, our top pick for budget routers. The Archer A6 uses a textured glossy black enclosure that measures 1.4 by 9.1 by 5.7 inches and has four non-removable antennas. Along the top front edge are LED status indicators for power, radio bands, Ethernet, Internet, and WPS. The rear panel holds Reset, Power, and WPS buttons, four gigabit LAN ports, a WAN port, and a power jack. The web portal opens to a network map that displays the number of wired and wireless clients and your internet status. Up top are Quick Setup, Basic, and Advanced tabs, and on the left is a settings menu. The Basic menu includes Internet, Wireless, Parental Controls, Guest Network, and TP-Link Cloud settings. Parental Controls lets you create profiles for family members to block access to specific sites using keywords, set internet time limits, and view all visited sites.
