How to Stop a Nosebleed Fast! (Epistaxis Treatment)

video thumbnail
Dr Ariel Waitzman discusses how to stop a nosebleed fast. Wether its at home, in a doctors office or at a hospital, there are different methods that can be used to treat Epistaxis fairly quickly.

How do you stop a nosebleed fast?
At home you can start treatment, if someone gets a nosebleed, often applying pressure for a long period of time can stop a nosebleed.

One common misconception is: There is no reason for the head to tilt backwards.

You can pinch the nose in the middle between the bone and the bottom of the nostril. The key thing is that the pressure has to be firm and the pressure has to be held continuously for a bare minimum of 5-10 minutes for a blood clot to be created. Anyone on blood thinners will need at least 10 minutes of pressure.

90% of nosebleeds come from the front of the nose, if we can visualize it, epistaxis can be treated fairly easily. At Dearborn ENT we can cauterize the nose to block the blood in the blood vessel.

Another option is nasal packing. Nasal packing is something we try to avoid here because it can be painful and traumatic to the nose. At a hospital this will often be the next option.

You can prevent a nosebleed. with moisture in the nostril, a humidifier, saline sprays and
saline gels
