In this video, we go back in time to Ancient Rome to witness the most incredible, most dramatic and most creative siege in military history – The Battle of Alesia. The battle took place in 52 BC in the territory of modern France. Romans (commanded by Julius Caesar) cornered their Gallic opponents (commanded by Vercingetorix) in the Fortress of Alesia. Outmanned and starting with a less advantageous position, Caesar reframed the battlefield, all under the impending threat of Gallic reinforcements, and ultimately inflicted a crushing defeat on both the besieged Galls and their reinforcements.

Caesar was a military and political genius. While this video focuses on Caesar's military tactics at the battle of Alesia, we also touch on Caesar's clever maneuvers in the constantly changing dynamics of Roman politics. To defeat the Galls, who took a defensive position behind their well fortified fortress walls, Caesar built walls of his own. Demonstrating Roman's superior engineering and construction skills, they built walls to protect themselves from both the fortified Galls and their reinforcements. These rings of fortification "sandwiched” the Roman army in their own type of fortress. While in theory, it looked like Cesar was now under siege, sitting between the two Gallic armies he actually was more like a giant constrictor, gradually suffocating and starving the army inside of Alesia, while preparing for an attack from the relieving army.
