Chord extensions are an excellent way to upgrade your rhythm guitar playing. What we mean by ‘chord extensions’ is the various types of 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th chords that exist.

Each of these extended chords has a unique character but are generally considered more ‘jazzy’ than plain major or minor chords.

If you are not familiar with music theory, try my music theory app which teaches the fundamental relationships between chords, scales and keys:

In this video we go through some of the main options for when you are looking to try extended chords to enhance your rhythm guitar playing.

Amongst other chords, we look at m7, m9 minor add9, m11 and m13 as extended chords to use in place of a straight minor. We also include sus2 and sus4 chords. For dominant chords we look at dom9, dom11, dom13 and 7sus4 chord.

We do this for the two most common chord shapes (CAGED shapes 1 and 4) for each chord type.

Although not mentioned in this video, if you are playing a maj7, you can usually choose to substitute in a maj9 chord in its place. This is a slightly darker chord than the maj7, and it typically only used in jazz or Latin jazz. Nonetheless it is an option that could be very effective.

In each case, you can either use these extended chords as complete substitution; i.e. to replace the original chord with; or you can use these extended chords as temporary side steps; i.e. you go back and forth between the original chord and the extended chords.

In this situation you are using the extended chord to ‘decorate’ the original chord.

As always, use your ears to decide what is best for the situation at hand. Approach this area step by step and then get the chord extensions into your normal playing as soon as you can.

With practice, using chord extensions in your playing becomes very natural and you will be a better rhythm guitarist because of it.
