Iceland Meteorological Office has published an update. You can either read the text of the update below or watch my video summery of it here:
https://youtu.be/k2iNez7hiXc An eruption started on the Sundhnúks crater series at 12:46 p.m The eruption is in the same area as the previous eruption Heavy flow south of Stóra-Scógfell approaching Grindavíkurveg. The lava has flowed about 1 km to the west during the first 45 minutes of the eruption. At: 14:05 the eruption is now about 3.4 km long The crack has extended further south and is about 300-400 meters north of the March-April crater. The flow rate of lava is roughly estimated at 1,000 km 3 /s ( correct unit is m3/s). Risk assessment updated The lava flows over Grindavíkurveg. The fissure is now about 3.4 km long. The flow rate of lava is roughly estimated at 1,500-2,000 m 3 /s. Seismic activity has decreased rapidly. It is constantly visible at a GPS station at Svartsengi. The highest jets are about 60-70 meters. Lava has reached the defenses west of Grindavík. Risk assessment updated in light of pyroclastic fall. The main part of the crater is about 2.4 km long. The lava has flowed over Grindavíkurveg and Nesveg. The flow rate of lava at the beginning of the eruption was roughly estimated at 1,500-2,000 m 3 /s. Tonight the wind direction turns to the southwest. Gas pollution could be noticed in the capital area tonight and tomorrow. I am a geologist by profession and training. This is an educational channel devoted mostly to spread of geological knowledge and education. I work hard to make the material you see presented to you in this short concise videos. Please support this channel by "LIKE"ing and sharing the videos and help them to be seen. I am making many videos every month. It is a constant stream of unique graphics and presentations of scientifically accurate and timely information about volcanoes. I am here for you to report everything about this fascinating subject. This is my expertise, my professional training, my education and my job. Please if you feel you like them, support my work by using the Super Thanks and membership of the channel. Thank you. Some of the images are produced by recent advances in Artificial Intelligence. They are just pretty pictures that AI is producing when a text describes a volcanic event or geological phenomenon for them. They are by no means represent the reality and are used here only for their graphical merits. A great source for live views of the volcano in Reykjanes Peninsula is the amazing mbl.is YouTube channel. Please SUBSCRIBE and like and share their live YouTube camera views here to help their work be known. Iceland depends on tourism and beyond the Reykjanes Peninsula there are plenty of sites with world class tourist attractions. If you want to help Iceland, plan a holiday to this amazing country. Icelandic people are kind and welcoming people and their food and cousin is second to none. The clip of starting moments of the eruption is courtesy of mbl Iceland. https://www.youtube.com/live/VIs83vmfZCk?si=HDltwgbkbLdg920k https://www.youtube.com/live/mHnSafmzG_c?si=gGFeWrtsw8bb0bpG Icelandic Meteorological Office is a great source of information and maps: https://www.vedur.is/um-vi/frettir/jardhraeringar-grindavik The team that designed the dikes at Grindavík and Svartsengi gained a lot of experience in designing and making them when experiments were carried out with dikes during the eruption at Fagradalsfjall in 2021. It was not surprising to the team when the dikes passed the test in the eruption on January 14. Hörn Hrafnsdóttir, water resources engineer at Verkís and assistant professor at the Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering at the University of Helsinki, and Sólveig Kristín Sigurðardóttir, geotechnical engineer at Verkís, are on the dam team. 3 D Model of eruption here : https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/sundhnuksgigar-eruption-08022024-time-1300-d3c8a7940b38489cbfc47cd14ff662c1?s=09 The GPS data is from University of Iceland here: https://strokkur.raunvis.hi.is/gps/8h.html GPS animation here: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/volcano_monitoring_measuring_deformation_and_tilt_with_gps Sulfur dioxide distribution map from here : https://www.windy.com/-SO2-tcso2 The thumbnail for this video is produced by an AI machine based on a text description. It does not represent, implied or inferred, the real ground facts. It is just a pretty picture chosen based on general advise by YouTube on choosing effective eye catching thumbnails. #Island #Iceland #Volcano #volcanoiceland #grindavik #earthquake #volcaniceruptionIceland #svartsengi #icelandvolcano #bluelagoon #powerplant #blue lagoon #eruptionGrindavik #News #BreakingNews #LatestNews #Krysuvik #reykjavik #Kevlavik #Bláfjalla #kleifarvatn #Hagafell #Sundhnúka_Craters |
