Mexico Votes to Choose New President Amid Candidates' Assassinations

Mexicans are voting to pick their next president. However, the election campaign has been overshadowed by violent attacks. According to reports 37 candidates have been assassinated ahead of the June 2 vote and 828 non-lethal attacks have been reported. On May 31, Jorge Huerta Cabrera, running for Izucar de Matamoros’ council seat, was gunned down. The 2024 election could go down in history as Mexicans may elect their first female president. The frontrunner of the presidential race remains the ruling Morena party’s Claudia Sheinbaum. She is a close ally of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and has promised to continue his pensions for senior citizens. Other contenders include opposition coalition’s Xochitl Galvez and the Citizens’ Movement party’s late entrant Jorge Alvarez Maynez. Galvez seeks to strengthen state and local police and is critical of rising violence under Obrador’s government. The polling will also elect members of Mexico Congress and governors in eight states.
