Why Do Android Updates Take So Long Compared To iOS and Windows Phone? |

In this video, I go over the common question/frustration that a lot of Android users have which can be summed up with one question: Why do Android phones take so long to get updated to the next version of the OS. For example, right now only 7.1 percent of Android phones are running the latest version (Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich). That means over 92% of phones out there are running outdated software. And this is 7 months after the release of ICS back in November. The main reasons for the slower updates on Android compared to OS' like iOS (iPhone) and Windows Phone are the three steps or processes that manufacturers have to go through: 1. Hardware differences like different chipsets, radio bands, networks etc have to be optimized. 2. Custom UI's have to be updated to work with the new OS. 3. Carriers have to test and approve the update to work with their network and apps (bloatware). All this adds up to a long wait for you to get the update on your Android phone. The Nexus line up of phones skips all three processes (for unlocked versions anyway) so that's why you see the updates on Nexuses much quicker than you would on other phones. Windows Phone restricts manufacturers to certain hardware limitations so it helps with the update process. The iPhone and iOS has the software from day one as Apple is both the manufacturer, software developer, and there is no carrier apps on the phone.
