When we look back at the history of Manchester, we think of it as starting around the industrial revolution and ending sometime around when the Hacienda closed down. Of course, that’s not even close to true. There’s plenty of evidence of Stone Age activity and most have heard about that Roman road that runs through here. But that’s a long, long time ago what happened in between. Today we’re going to the border of Bowdon and Dunham Massey in the historic county of Cheshire. It’s now part of Greater Manchester but perhaps for the purposes of todays video we should call it the Kingdom of Mercia. When you think of England, one of the first things that comes to mind is castles. It’s not something you usually associate with Manchester. But there were castles all over England’s landscape during the Norman conquest. Today we explore one of Greater Manchester’s Motte and Bailey castles.
