President Donald Trump appears to have a commanding lead over Joe Biden in North Carolina with most of the votes already counted. Trump declared victory in North Carolina from the White House early Wednesday morning, saying he "clearly" defeated Biden, despite the state reporting about 115,000 ballots left to be counted.
As for Biden, the former vice president overperformed Hillary Clinton in Mecklenburg County from 2016, but was unable to close the gap enough to overcome Trump's advantage in rural areas across the state. As of 4 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4, the gap between Trump and Biden is around 75,000 votes. It's unclear if the remaining ballots will all be processed or if some of those voters chose to vote in person, canceling out their requested absentee ballot. The Associated Press is not calling the presidential race yet because neither candidate has secured the 270 electoral college votes needed to claim victory. |
