Coronavirus: Trudeau, health officials provide update on COVID-19 vaccine distribution | FULL

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday discussed the country's COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan, saying a majority of Canadians should be vaccinated against the coronavirus by next September.

He cited Canada’s top doctors as he detailed the news from outside his home.

“The fact that the doctors highlighted that if all goes according to plan, we should be able to have a majority of Canadians vaccinated by next September, puts us in very good stead,” Trudeau said, speaking from the front steps of Rideau Cottage.

“We’re working extremely hard to deliver as quickly and as safely as possible.”

Trudeau also provided details of how the rollout plan for those vaccines is starting to take shape. He shared that he has tapped the former head of the NATO mission in Iraq, Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, to lead the federal government’s COVID-19 distribution of a vaccine.

Trudeau's briefing was followed by a COVID-19 update from federal health officials including Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's chief public health officer and Dr. Howard Njoo, deputy chief public health officer.

Njoo responded to the prime minister's comments that a majority of Canadians could be vaccinated for COVID-19 by next September, saying they would hope to offer vaccines “by the end of next year," but that Trudeau’s comment was “in the same ballpark” because it’s “a bit of a moving target.”
