Fauci Debunks Key Republican Talking Point About Immigrants

video thumbnail
Dr. Anthony Fauci tried to pour cold water on a key Republican talking point this week by saying that immigrants are NOT driving the COVID surge in the United States. Instead, Fauci said that people the problem is one of our own making here in the U.S., and that we need to each be protecting ourselves in order to slow, and maybe stop, the spread. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins discusses this and explains why Republicans are hellbent on blaming the pandemic on immigrants.

Over the weekend, Dr. Anthony Fauci poured cold water on one of the Republican party's favorite talking points and that is that the surge in COVID cases here in the United States is not because of the anti maskers, it's not because of the anti-vaxxers, it's because of those pesky immigrants coming across the Southern border. And Fauci, when asked about that question on last Sunday's Sunday talk shows said, absolutely not. Is it possible for immigrants, migrants to carry COVID? Sure, 100%, obviously. But are they the reason it's spreading in areas that do not have immigrants? Absolutely not, Fauci tells us. And then he went on to say that the problem is homegrown. The problem is coming from within our own country and within our own residents, just like it is for every other country out there on the planet. It's not the people coming in. It's the people on the inside who refuse to take care of themselves.

We have seen a Republican Texas governor, Greg Abbott, attempt to blame Texas' COVID surge on migrants coming across the Southern border. Which again, makes no sense considering the fact that they're rounding these people up, putting them in detention facilities, they're not exposed to the general public. We have also seen Florida governor Ron DeSantis make this same claim, which again is ridiculous because we don't have massive waves of immigrants flooding into the state of Florida and exposing the general population. Those aren't things that are happening. But Republicans need an out and that's what this is all about. Scapegoating these migrants. Convincing their base, who already hates these individuals because they look different from them, that they're to blame for their health problems. It's always the same strategy with the Republican party. Oh, you're mad that you're not making enough money at your job? Well, it's because you have lazy people on welfare.

That was the talking points of the eighties. Oh, you're not happy that you're not making enough with your job now? Well that's because the good paying jobs went all the way down to Mexico or it's because your employer is hiring these undocumented immigrants to come in and do the job for cheaper. They're always telling people who are unhappy with some aspect of their lives, that it's not because of bad policy that their lives are, it's because of the others. And as I've talked about in the past, the others has taken many forms over the years. The others has been black people. The others has been migrants. The others following 9/11 has been Muslims. The others most recently has been Asian Americans. They do whatever they can to convince you that they aren't to blame for the problems you're facing. When in reality, it is very easy to prove that they are in fact, the reason things are so bad.
