Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reassured Canadians on Tuesday that despite the “unideal” global delay in vaccine delivery by Pfizer, Canada’s vaccination goals for the first quarter of 2021 are not affected and remain the same.

He touted efforts of his government to vaccinate Indigenous communities across Canada, saying all 600 doses delivered to Cowichan tribes in Vancouver Island last week were administered within two days.

Trudeau also defended his longstanding support for the Keystone XL pipeline project, saying his government will pursue the matter at the highest levels of communication with the Biden administration, which according to reports intends to cancel the project in the first days of Biden’s presidency.

Federal health officials provided a COVID-19 update following the prime minister, in which Major-General Dany Fortin announced Canada would receive no vaccines for the week of Jan. 25 amid global delays in supply.

Minister of Public Services and Procurement Anita Anand said she spent the past weekend on calls with Pfizer executives with her team reiterating the "importance" for Canada to return to its regular delivery schedule as soon as possible. Anand reassured Canadians the Moderna vaccine supply is unaffected.
