Pelion the land of the centaurs - Mountain, wonderful beaches and Greek traditions |

Pelion is a mountain in the southeastern part of Thessaly in central Greece, forming a hook-shaped peninsula between the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. The highest peak, Pourianos Stavros, has an altitude of 1624 meters.
Pelion is the well-known Greek peninsula located between Athens and Thessaloniki, near the city of Volos, being the perfect combination of mountain and sea - a perfect destination for a stay in Greece with the family.

Tourist resorts such as Kala Nera, Koropi, Afissos, Milies delight tourists, attracted by the wide, sandy beaches and crystal clear water of the Aegean Sea. Pelion is the ideal place for a vacation in Greece, where you can combine beach days with mountain hikes or day cruises to the islands of Skiathos or Skopelos. 150 km away from Pelion is the resort of Kamena Vourla, famous for its thermal springs and the neighboring area, Termopile.
On Mount Pelion there are 24 traditional villages, bigger or smaller, richer or poorer, some can be seen from far away, others are hidden by forests. Among the serpentines, the traditional houses seem to have grown together with the trees and are clinging to the mountain slopes one above the other. In the middle of villages with narrow streets are squares with stone fountains and secular plane trees, old churches hide treasures, and houses with Ottoman or neoclassical architecture are built of stone and wood and have richly ornamented balconies. The picturesque picture is completed by several taverns, cafes and handicraft and souvenir shops.
The gateway to Pelion is the city of Volos. From here a winding road bravely climbs the mountain and reaches the village of Portaria. During the Turkish occupation the village was prosperous and famous for its silk products. Portaria is still a traditional village, and many of the largest and most beautiful houses of the 19th century have become hotels or guesthouses.

Beaches in Pelion

Food:

In Pelion, wines, liqueurs, brandies, jams, olive oil, herbs, teas and honey are among the most appreciated in all of Greece.
The local apple is called fyriki and has small and aromatic fruits from which jams and a very fragrant sherbet are made, which is served with a glass of cold water.
If you arrive in Pelion try local traditional specialties: white bean soup, tyropsomo - a bread prepared with cheese and oregano or spetsofai - a spicy dish prepared with peppers, tomatoes and sausages.
Don't forget to look for taramosalata, a kind of roe salad prepared with potatoes.
Some of the local specialties worth trying are spetzofai, mousakas, "tsitsiravla", pies and local meat as well. The culinary feast will be completed by the traditional sweets of Pelion, usually made "at home"
