Fidelity ZERO Funds are Fidelity's own Index Funds that they created an index to track. Tracking an index from an index provider such as the S&P costs money, so this way Fidelity can offer you a product that is "free" in order to entice new customers and sustain users on their platform. These were the first index funds to be created in 2018 that truthfully give investors the benefit of paying no fees, aka, ZERO fees The differences are not significant between these funds and the regular fee-based funds, but a further analysis was required to understand the details between them. Below are some of the pros and cons toward investing in the ZERO funds vs Fee-Based Funds and explain some of the reasons toward why choosing one over the either is not a simple yes or no answer. Pros: 1. Cheaper... ZERO Fees 2. Fidelity managed and not a third party (some say good, some say bad) Neutral: 1. Returns are extremely similar, some are better, some are worse (no significant difference besides Extended Market Fund). 2. Somewhat similar results Cons: 1. Less holdings in each fund (less exposure, potentially more risk) 2. Higher turnover ratios (this means more capital gains taxes to be triggered, bad unless tax deferred account) I personally do not own the Fidelity ZERO Funds, but do not see a reason to argue against it besides the exposure from the funds having more holdings. The turnover ratio does not affect me since I only invest in Index Funds in tax deferred accounts, ETFs in taxable accounts. Don't let time keep passing, let your money work for you.
