Are you looking to add more movement and texture into your acrylic and oil paintings? In today's video I will demonstrate how to use spoons and palette knives on this tulips painting and create a fantastic, low relief sculpture effect in paint as well as a sense of movement.

I am painting with a spoon applying thick slabs of oil color. the technique is identical when you are using acrylic paint. This painting is on stretched cotton canvas and is 36 inches tall and 36 inches wide. I waited until the underpainting was thoroughly dry before adding this texture.

There are many tools you can use to add texture to your artwork. You can use painting knives, palette knives, spoons, cotton buds (Q-Tips), sponges, brushes, your fingers, really anything can be used to make texture.

Palette knives have a flat blade and are normally used to mix paint but you can also apply paint with them
Painting knives have the hooked edge -see that hooked edge when you look from the side? They come in many sizes and shapes, and can make some wonderful textures
Spoons I use two different sizes of spoons in my work. The spoon leaves a soft, wide mark that is difficult to replicate with a painting knife. Remember if you paint with a spoon to not use it for eating

I employ vigorous brushwork and texture through the palette knife in my work so that people may experience along with me the "feel" of the painting. I find mosaics fascinating how the individual pieces all contribute to the whole- I want my paintings to have a similar idea where overlapping petals of paint all stand on their own and then contribute to the total.

My work known as "Daubism" is created using a palette knife where each stroke of color is isolated from the others. Most paintings will have hundreds of different colors, these colors are all individually hand-mixed from a limited set of colors creating unique colors which relate to one another. I am striving for a sensual, tactile surface in paint."

I am an American artist whose bold contemporary paintings focus on joyful use of color, texture and movement, creating a low relief effect in paint- a hybrid between low relief sculpture, mosaic, and traditional painting.
