(20 Jul 2014) Scores of wounded Palestinians were brought to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City early on Sunday, after Israel widened its ground offensive.
Loud explosions shook Gaza throughout the night as Israeli flares lit up the sky and fighter jets flew low across the densely populated territory. Footage showed wounded Palestinians, including children and medical personnel, being rushed into Gaza City's main hospital, and bodies wrapped in white shrouds at the morgue of the hospital. Since the start of fighting almost two weeks ago, Gaza health officials say 348 Palestinians have been killed and 2,700 wounded in Israeli air and artillery strikes. One-fourth of the deaths were reported since the start of the ground offensive late on Thursday, the officials said. Five Israelis, three soldiers and two civilians, have also been killed and dozens wounded as rockets continue to rain down on Israel. Israel widened its ground offensive early on Sunday, sending more troops into the Hamas-ruled territory to destroy tunnels used by the Islamic militants to try to sneak into Israel.
