Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #10: Third Basic Phrase Variation Syncopated
in: Este Seu Olhar (Antonio Carlos Jobim) as played by João Gilberto on album João Gilberto from 1961. The transcription is based on the version of Este Seu Olhar as it was released in Brasil. The same version can be found on The Legendary João Gilberto CD that contains first three Brazilian bossa nova albums by João Gilberto. This video shows the third basic bossa nova phrase syncopated (4213). This phrase is based on additive rhythm 3+2+3+2+3+3 with the addition of the last beat in second measure (beat 16). Few things to note about this lesson: 1. Bossa nova songs sometimes start with the second measure of the rhythmic phrase played first, in which case we speak about the rhythmic phrase played in reverse. This can be seen in the first phrase of Este Seu Olhar as well as in many songs that contain Partido Alto phrase. 2. Intro phrase 356x contains 4 groups of two beats with rests between them. The beats are played in tempo rubato such that the beats last slightly longer than 16th notes, and the rests slightly shorter. That way the off beats fall somewhere between the regular 16th note and a triplet. This way the phrase sounds a bit softer than it would have sounded had it been played in tempo.
