Waiting Time: Surviving the German Asylum System | When I came to Germany

video thumbnail
On this panel, four women discussed what it means to assert themselves in the German asylum system while living with the constant threat of deportation. It was moderated by Black, queer, transcultural activist Asma-Esmeralda Abd'Allah-Álvarez Ramírez. The women’s stories speak of their self-assertion, their resistance and their self-organisation.

Doris Messa has already resisted two deportation attempts - she was able to defend herself successfully at the last moment and still fights for her self-determined residence.

Ivanka Sinani is a Roma activist and has lived in Germany since the 1990s. In 2002 she joined the “Karawane” convoy of protestors who marched for nine months, demanding the right to residence for Roma people.

Jacqueline Maffo is co-founder of Women in Exile, a self-organised group of migrant women and mothers who joined forces to defend themselves against the violent and humiliating living and working conditions of refugees in the camps, as well as in German society.

Masture Hares described the devastating situation in Afghanistan, which for women in particular is anything but a "safe country of origin" as it is declared by the German state. The meeting of these women was a strong call for solidarity between women worldwide.
