TRADITIONAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN INDONESIAN MUSIC:
Gamelan (pronounced Gah-Meh-Lahn) is the largest form of traditional music in Indonesia. The two main types of Gamelan are Java Gamelan and Bali Gamelan. It's basically an orchestra with a lot of different instruments. The highlight of Gamelan is expressing a profound spirit by connecting musical instruments together. You will see them at any social gathering in Indonesia. This is a worldwide art form that spreads from Indonesia to Gamelan groups in the US and Europe. It is believed that Gamelan was created by a Javanese king in the third century and was played at the royal court.

Instrument players in Gamelan not only have to be technically skilled, but also need to be able to express their spirit for each instrument. Gamelan is not just a traditional orchestra, it is also a series of musical instruments. Musical instruments connect the living world with the spirit. Therefore each tool in Gamelan represents a different meaning:

The Kroncong is a musical instrument directly related to the traditional Portuguese ukulele. The ukulele was introduced to Indonesia by Portuguese sailors. Indonesians have further developed this musical instrument. Kroncong includes 2 types: Cak and Cuk. Cak has 4 strings, is thinner and is used to play chords, while Cuk is thicker, has 3 strings and plays arpeggios.
Angklung is considered the most popular and oldest musical instrument in Indonesia, created by the Sunda people. In 2010, it was recognized by UNESCO as an intangible heritage. It is one of the most attractive wooden instruments, which relies on sustained resonance on each tube with its own unique resonant frequency. The tubes are mounted on two larger bamboo tubes.

This musical instrument along with several forms of music have a spiritual connection with Dewi Sri - the goddess of rice and fertility. The natives would play it with the hope of a good harvest.

The Balinese widely use Angklung in Gamelan in combination with metallophones and gongs with medium to high sounds. Gamelan angklung is used in celebrations as well as performing rituals after death.
Kacapi-Suling is a variation of Tembang Sunda. It looks and sounds similar but doesn't have the vocals.
