Public transport workers were to walk off the job in a series of work stoppages on Wednesday, with buses, trams, the Athens metro and national railway all halting services for several hours. Hospital doctors were to hold a one-day strike, while unions were planning demonstrations in Athens in the evening. Greece's government has imposed stringent austerity measures in an attempt to pull the country out of its debt crisis, including cutting civil servants' salaries, trimming pensions and hiking consumer and income taxes. In return for a 110 (b) billion euro (147.5 (b) billion US dollar) package of rescue loans from European countries and the International Monetary Fund over the next three years, Athens undertook painful austerity measures intended to bring the budget deficit within EU constraints by 2014. The cutbacks have angered unions and sparked a series of strikes and protests. "We are asking for better days, for greater work, better times to come for workers, for pensioners for the unemployed, for all social classes," Vangelis Bouzoulas, the General Secretary of the Greek General Confederation of Labour said.
