Forspoken is a third-person, open-world action adventure RPG. The easiest way to think of this game is as a hybrid of Eastern and Western game design. Its open-world design, fantasy setting, and chatty character banter are decidedly Western traits. Its flashy combat, and environmental and monster designs are extremely Japanese. Combat is fast and acrobatic, and full of swordplay and spellcasting. The open-world adventuring recalls games like Horizon: Forbidden West and The Witcher 3, riding into towns and settlements and meeting the locals in branching conversations.

From what we’ve seen, gameplay is going to put a huge focus on fluid movements and acrobatics. We’re assuming that means that there will be a lot of dodge timing involved, and then waiting for the opportune moment to unleash some of the incredibly cool spells that Frey has at their disposal.

Forspoken is an open-world action RPG with parkour features that reels you in with its cool-looking combat system and graphics. The movement in particular seems to be something that fans will love. I mean... dashing around is always cool. However, Frey also has a lasso with which she can pull herself up on cliffs. Almost like Aloy in Horizon.

This is, of course, a single-player experience. Forspoken is not a multiplayer game so, for those who were hoping for slashy, spell-slinging multiplayer fights, sadly, you will be left wanting.

There will also be a lot of the standard RPG bits and bobs that you’d expect, like upgrading different skills and spells, searching for loot, and crafting too. Probably the most standout part of the game, in terms of being unique at least, is that you’ll be able to paint Frey’s nails with different patterns to make more powerful spells. We’re not sure if there will be different patterns for different spells, but it’s a cool idea.

Because this is an open-world game, there will also be towers to find that’ll help you reveal key points you should be heading to for story purposes or for upgrades. You’ll also be talking to your magical Cuff throughout the game, but hopefully that won’t end up being really annoying or anything.


Finally, since some have asked: the game runs on the Luminous Engine, which was developed internally by Square Enix. Final Fantasy XV, you may remember, was also built in the Luminous Engine.

Keep in mind, though, that you can't just do all of that for free (because nothing is ever free, even in video games. Sadge). You have a stamina bar that will deplete eventually if you don't keep an eye on it. Stamina is also used during combat, so don't use all these abilities first and then rush into a boss fight.

Apart from fighting and running around freely, you have the typical open-world things that you can do in Forspoken, that being:

collect and craft materials like flowers or crystals
collect mana points to learn new spells
rest and craft in your base
main and side quests
find and open chests with loot
boss fights all around the world á la Elden Ring

Forspoken story details
Forspoken is essentially a fantasy epic meets isekai story. What is an isekai story? Isekai is a Japanese word which means “different world”. Characters in isekai stories are typically transported to another world, where they must survive and often take on a role of importance. Examples of isekai stories in anime include classic shows like Vision of Escaflowne and Inuyasha, and films like Now and Then, Here and There and Spirited Away. Modern isekai stories like Sword Art Online and The Rising of the Shield Hero remain extremely popular.

Forspoken follows a young woman named Frey Holland (played by Ella Balinska), who is transported from her home in New York City into a fantasy world called Athia. Athia is a place trapped under the rule of the Tantas Sila (Janina Gavankar) and Prave (Pollyanna McIntosh). As she searches for a way home, Frey begins to manifest and collect magical powers. She is joined on her journey by a chatterbox bracelet named Cuff.
