Ontario’s associate chief medical officer of health, Dr. Barbara Yaffe, and chief coroner Dr. Dirk Huyer provided an update on the province's COVID-19 cases on Thursday, where 1,210 new cases of coronavirus were reported, bringing the provincial total to 99,372.

It is the 14th consecutive day that daily case counts have been above 1,000. The seven-day average is now at 1,369, which is up from last Thursday’s at 1,299.

Most of the cases reported over the last few days were from Toronto, Peel Region, York Region, Hamilton and Halton, Yaffe said.

Yaffe stated the province's COVID-19 trends are “concerning,” and “overall, we’re heading in the wrong direction.” She said the province “needs to get these numbers down” to protect Ontarians, as well as the health-care system from becoming overwhelmed.

Yaffe and Huyer also explained why having 150 COVID-19 patients in Ontario’s intensive care units is concerning, stating that the number was calculated to allow enough ICU beds to continue with elective surgery and other patients that require ICU treatment. Yaffe said if the number exceeds 150 for COVID-19 patients, “it will impact negatively on people requiring ICU care for other reasons.”
