Volunteers still needed for NeoCart study |

(KUTV) Earlier this year, we told you about a nationwide study on knee cartilage injuries. Researchers at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital in Murray are involved in the NeoCart study. The study is looking into an investigational new procedure for knee cartilages injuries. The study looks into whether tissue implants made from a patient's own cells can help prevent the injury from later developing into arthritis. TOSH researchers are looking for volunteers here in Utah to participate in the study. In order to perform the NeoCart procedure, surgeons will first obtain a sample of healthy cartilage from the patients knee. The small sample will be treated and placed under special conditions in the laboratory that allow for cell growth. These cells will be used to form a tissue implant in the shape of a small disc. The implant will then be returned to the surgeon for surgical implantation into the patients injury site in the knee. Following the initial story, many 2News viewers called looking for more information. If you are interested, you can call (801) 314-4956. You will have an evaluation to see if you meet the criteria to participate in the study. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 55 years old and are suffering from knee pain. Those with ligament injuries may or may not qualify to participate in the study. ________Copyright 2015 Sinclair Broadcast Group
