On July 15-16, the National Archives and Records Administration hosted the National Conversation on Rights and Justice: LGBTQ Human and Civil Rights at the Center on Halsted and the Chicago History Museum. This program was part of a nationwide initiative to facilitate discussion of rights in the 21st century.
On Saturday, July 16, there was a series of discussions at the Chicago History Museum on LGBTQ human and civil rights in the United States. Kim Hunt, executive director of Pride Action Tank, introduced the day or programs. Ambassador Fay Hartog Levin of the National Archives Foundation board and Mario Camacho, president of LEAGUE at AT&T Chicago, spoke about their sponsorship of the events. David S. Ferriero, archivist of the United States, also welcomed guests. Poet Richard Blanco will deliver the keynote address, followed by a Q&A. At 11:15 a.m., Mary Morten moderated a panel discussion on "The Issues Before Us" ( part 1 ), exploring legal issues, with James Bennett, Lambda Legal; Dale Carpenter, University of Minnesota; Naomi Goldberg, Movement Advancement Project ( MAP ); and Tyrone Hanley, National Center for Lesbian Rights. Other panels were also held on socio-economic and transgender/gender non-confirming issues.
