The global pandemic ushered in a revolution in the ways and places we work. For the first time in modern history, work and family life for many people are taking place primarily in the home. Yet despite the switch to remote working, and forecasts about the demise of the physical workplace, most companies are developing hybrid models of work: a blend of employees working in home offices, satellite offices, co-working spaces, and headquarters. The pandemic also further exposed conditions that have led to allegations of systemic racism, making business leaders and their employees increasingly sensitive to racial, gender, and other forms of inequality in the workplace. Given all these changes, this webinar will explore the following questions:

What will post-covid hybrid workplaces look like and feel like?
To what extent are workplace experts re-designing work environments that address the needs of different genders and races?
How will employees navigate the new digital and material terrains of work?
And what will the impact of all of these changes have on people’s career experiences and opportunities for occupational mobility?
Speaker:

Melissa Fisher, a cultural anthropologist, is a Visiting Scholar at New York University’s Institute for Public Knowledge, a Distinguished Principal Research Fellow at the Conference Board, and an Adjunct Professor in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. Previously she taught at the University of Copenhagen, New York University, and Georgetown University. She has also worked as an independent consultant, applying anthropological and cultural approaches to workplace strategy for the past two decades.

Melissa is an expert on globalization, organizations, technology, work, and culture. Her first book, Frontiers of Capital: Ethnographic Reflections on the New Economy explored economic and technological innovations at the turn of the millennium. Wall Street Women, her second, examines the first generation of women in finance (1956-2010). She is working on a book about the future of work in the age of pandemics, political unrest, and social movements.

Melissa has given hundreds of key notes and talks nationally and internationally. Her research has been profiled by The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, The Guardian, CNBC, NPR, and the BBC. She is currently a US Delegate to the Women's 20, a policy group that advises the G20 on gender issues on financial, digital, labor inclusion and environmental sustainability. She serves on a number of advisory bodies, including the Women Creating Change Leadership Council at Columbia University’s Center for the Study of Social Difference. She is also a member of The Global Foresight Project based out of Stockholm University.
