You would think that the rewards for achievements in war would be land or money, right? However, surprisingly, there was a time when the rewards were tea utensils. After risking their lives in battle, why were the samurai satisfied with tiny tools as rewards?

The mechanism was created by the famous Oda Nobunaga.

Nobunaga understood that there would be a limit to the amount of land he could continue to give his men as rewards. What caught his attention was the tea ceremony, which was becoming very popular among the samurai during that era.

Oda Nobunaga bought and dominated famous utensils from all over the country and charged outrageous prices for them, thereby making their values overwhelming. He also elevated the value of tea ceremonies by giving only a limited number of people the authority to hold them.

So for the samurai, owning famous tea utensils became a social status. Thus, samurai risked their lives to fight for the right to hold tea ceremonies and some even lost their lives defending their tea utensils.

I think this is an interesting story that shows how fascinating tea ceremony culture is, and how intelligent Oda Nobunaga was. Although Nobunaga's violent side is often highlighted, his intelligence is the reason why he has made such a strong mark on history.
