O Grande Amor - Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #3: Basic Phrase Syncopated Reversed 1312 |
![]() |
This is based on the guitar accompaniment played by João Gilberto on album Getz/Gilberto. The lesson shows the usage of basic bossa nova phrase with syncopated last beat of the first measure. This phrase can also be constructed by a polyrhythmic composition of 2 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 with simple 2/4 rhythm.
Few things to note about guitar accompaniment: 1. This song was first recorded as a samba-canção with some chords different from this version. For Getz/Gilberto recording João Gilberto replaced some maj7 chords with 9 (m6) chords. This created an interesting chord progression with five consecutive 7th chords resulting in the higher tension and more dramatic sound. 2. Similar to the O Pato lesson this song is also played mainly by mezzo-staccato and has some ghost notes in the closing section. Enjoy playing O Grande Amor!
