The church of Panagia Vlaherna is built on a small island which is now connected to the mainland of Corfu via a narrow stone trail used as footbridge for the visitors. The church of Panagia Vlaherna is a small white church with tile roof and a characteristic belfry (belltower) with triple storey spire which functions as the main entry to churches’ courtyard. It was a nunnery (monastery for women) until 1980. The church of Panagia Vlaherna dates back to the 17th c. and the name “Vlaherena” or “Vlaherna” derived from a famous district of Constantinople where the homonymous byzantine monastery - one of the most important Orthodox pilgrimages- is built.
