Why Do Tectonic Plates Move: The Theory of Plate Tectonics | Planet Earth | Continental Drift |
|
How do mountains form and continents move, why do earthquakes occur and volcanoes erupt? The answer to the causes of these grandiose phenomena is given by the theory of lithospheric plate tectonics. The earth's crust under our feet is not as motionless as it might seem. The outer layer of the Earth, called the lithosphere, is divided into dozens of blocks - tectonic plates that "float" on the surface of the molten mantle. They constantly collide and repel, forming mountains and giant rifts, causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. This video will take us deep inside our planet Earth to find out how and why the lithospheric plates move. We will also talk about a supercontinent called Pangea, Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift, and much more.
