(3 May 2019) Turkish Foreign Minister Melvut Cavusoglu met his Hungarian counterpart Peter Szijjarto in Budapest for talks on Friday.
Speaking after their meeting, Cavusoglu told reporters that Turkey and the United States were making arrangements for a possible visit to Turkey by US President Donald Trump, amid a deepening rift between the two NATO allies over Turkey's purchase of Russian-made S-400 missile defence systems.
The US says the S-400 system poses a threat to the U.S. F-35 fighter jet programme of which Turkey is also a partner.
Cavusoglu repeated that Turkey does not believe that the Russian system would pose a threat to the F-35 fighter jet programme and added that Turkey has proposed the establishment of a joint committee to review any possible risks.
For his part, the Hungarian foreign minister said that Turkey "should not be misled" about the country's EU-membership.
"If the large EU countries don't want the EU to expand with Turkey, then it won't expand with Turkey, " Szijjarto said.
