Life After ACL Surgery (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) |
![]() |
ACL surgery is the surgical procedure to remove or replace the damaged anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee. The total recovery time is 8 to 9 months.
Surgeons will recommend the RICE first aid model (rest, ice, compression, elevation) to help alleviate the swelling. Avoid using a heating pad during the first week after surgery. You can put weight on your leg 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. You can walk unassisted within 2-4 weeks, but for short periods. You can return to work after 2 to 3 weeks if it's a desk job. Driving is allowed after 6 weeks. You should be able to stand on 1 leg for 1 minute to be fit to drive. You can start brisk walking, light jogging, and even light exercise after 10-12 weeks. Bike riding or lightweight leg presses are allowed after 3 months. Physical therapy is required for 2 or 6 months.
