The US National Hurricane Center has confirmed Hurricane Ian has strengthened into a Category 4 storm, reaching life-threatening levels as it charges toward Florida’s west coast, packing winds of 155 mph.

After battering Cuba’s coastline on Tuesday 27 September rain and winds swirled north toward the Florida coast.
